ABOUT US
Our story…
Unearth Adventure’s origin story begins with two fresh university graduates looking to make a positive change for the natural world. Nick and Sonny embarked on what would become almost a decade of adventures and experiences. From conserving sea turtles in Sumatra to documenting the work of tropical biologists and researchers in Borneo the two learned the trials and tribulations facing the ecosystems in the places they visited. Through their combined passion for adventure, conservation and wildlife Unearth Adventure was born. A travel company that connects people to biodiversity hotspots, conservation in action and an opportunity to make a genuine difference through their travels. Unearth Adventure’s business model measures its success through our Travel with Purpose initiative. This initiative aims to support conservation projects in the destinations we travel to through ecosystem restoration and preservation of threatened species and their habitat.
Meet the Team
Nick Royal, Co-founder
Nick’s passion for wildlife began from a young age providing the cornerstone to build his career around. Nick is an ecologist by profession and has spent years developing his knowledge in Australia and the tropics of Southeast Asia. Nick is an avid wildlife and nature photographer enjoying nothing more than exploring the wilderness with a camera in hand. His key wildlife interests include birds and reptiles, however, he appreciates all creatures of the forest. Nick’s years living in Borneo working in tourism and conservation provided a unique opportunity to assist in the development of sustainable community-based tourism initiatives and develop a deep understanding of the conservation issues the species and ecosystems of Borneo face.
“We created Unearth Adventure as a way to appreciate the unique destinations we visit whilst quantifying the positive environmental impact we create through the business.”
Sonny Royal, Co-founder
Sonny has long been a travel guru working across a variety of conservation and sustainable tourism initiatives in remote and wild places. Sonny has since developed a career as an ecologist, acquired a Masters in environmental sustainability, and has a long-held passion for tropical biology. Photography has been a driving focus behind the adventures Sonny has embarked on throughout Southern and Southeast Asia capturing the work of scientists and natural beauty along the way. Sonny spent much of his early career working in Sumatra and Borneo with a focus on conservation and responsible tourism initiatives - from sea turtle conservation management to orangutan field research, Sonny’s adventures have provided a wealth of experience and insight to tropical habitats. Sonny’s passion for conservation, biodiversity and travel drives his desire to not only enjoy the places we visit but to actively contribute to preserving the natural world.
