DESTINATION OVERVIEW

Your adventure begins in Sandakan, upon arrival transfer to Sepilok (30mins drive) – your gateway to the tropical rainforests and natural wonders of Borneo.
Sit back and relax at your accommodation and keep an eye out for wildlife locals around your bungalow whilst your adventure companions arrive. Once the group arrives we will join for a meet and greet dinner at the lodge.

Prepare for a full day exploration of the Sepilok-Kabili Forest Reserve area. Our first stop is the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center. You will join a private talk with the founder and CEO of the center, Dr Wong Siew Te. Afterwards, visit the morning feeding at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center.
After lunch, rest and relax before going out again at mid-afternoon to the Rainforest Discovery Center. Here, we will explore some of the trails and visit the excellent canopy walkway for some wildlife and bird watching. At sundown, we continue for a night walk at the discovery center. Night walks along the trail also offer visitors a chance to catch a glimpse of the wildlife that has made the rainforest their homes, including cunning mouse deer, wily civet cats, cute tarsiers and various insects and birds.
Return to Sepilok Nature Resort for dinner and overnight.

Pick up from your hotel at 9am and head to the orangutan sanctuary to watch the younger, playful orangutans in the nursery before catching the 10:00am feeding. From there you will travel 2 hours overland to Hornbill Lodge and have lunch on arrival. Check-in and relax before heading out on your first river cruise at 4:00pm. Over the next 2 hours, your guide will be on the lookout for proboscis monkey, long-tail and pig-tailed macaques, silvered langurs, orangutans, saltwater crocodiles, birds and more! After your river cruise, return to the lodge for dinner before joining your guide on an included night walk.

As day dawns, join your second river cruise and watch as the river comes to life. Keep an eye out for bird life including Borneo’s endemic hornbills and have another chance to spot multiple species of primates.
Return to the lodge for breakfast then join your guide for a jungle walk looking for signs of orangutans such as nests in the trees or even orang-utans themselves if you are lucky! Enjoy lunch overlooking the river and a chance to rest before joining your afternoon river cruise. This cruise will focus on searching for pygmy elephants and may depart a little earlier if we need to travel further up or down river, there will also be plenty of other wildlife spotting opportunities along the way. After dinner, join your guide for an included night walk or optional add-on night cruise in search of nocturnal wildlife along the river bank.

Wake up early and join your guide for a dawn river cruise. Return to the lodge and enjoy breakfast overlooking the river. After breakfast, explore a nearby trail with your guide in search of orangutans, gibbons and a plethora of bird species.
Have lunch at the lodge before leaving to the Gomantong caves in the afternoon. Explore the boardwalk that runs through Simud Hitam and keep an eye out for orangutans in the vicinity of the caves. As the sun starts to set, make your way up a steep 500 step staircase to the viewpoint overlooking the caves and a chance to witness over 1 millions bats exiting the caves at dusk. Return to the lodge for dinner followed by a night walk if you still have the energy!

Wake up to the sounds of the forest and join a final wildlife spotting dawn river cruise before breakfast.
Depart from the lodge around 8:30am for the 2 hour overland journey to Lahad Datu. After a stop for registration, begin your journey into Danum Valley with wildlife spotting opportunities along the way.
After lunch your guide will give you an orientation to the Field Centre before setting off for an afternoon walk. The area surrounding the centre teems with wildlife and it is not unusual for you to spot resident orangutan, hornbills, maroon langurs etc. Return to centre before sundown and enjoy dinner at 7:00pm. Following dinner, go on an included night walk with your guide.

Wake up early for an early morning walk and more wildlife sighting possibilities. Return to the Field Centre for breakfast then embark on a trail with your guide. Trail options can be discussed with your guide and he will make recommendations based on trail conditions and recent wildlife sightings. After dinner, join a 4X4 night drive in search of nocturnal wildlife.

Rise before dawn for a 4x4 drive to Bukit Atur for a breathtaking sunrise experience atop a canopy of trees (weather dependent). Return to the centre for breakfast and embark on a trail in the area. Spend the late morning resting before having lunch and heading off for another trek with your guide. Return to the centre in the late afternoon, in time to watch the sky change colour as the sun sets. After dinner, go on a night walk with your guide or arrange for an optional add-on 4x4 night drive.

Wake up early for an early morning walk and more wildlife sighting possibilities. Return to the Field Centre for breakfast then transfer out to Lahad Datu and onto Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Upon arrival, check-in to your river chalet and take a walk to explore the local Lipad River area, home to a surprising variety of birds, insects and small mammals. Discover the rich variety of jungle herbs, some endemic, used for generations by local folks for the treatment of various ailments.
In the afternoon, trek with your guide from the Elephant trail to the active Lipad mud volcano which provides a mineral salt lick for wildlife, arrive at the elevated bare area of the mud volcano which is frequented by wildlife and birds. Try to identify the multitude of animal footprints here. The adventurous can try the effects of the volcanic mud, said to be responsible for a fine complexion. Trek from the mud volcano back to the main road. After dinner join the 4X4 night safari drive looking for nocturnal animals

Join the early morning bird walk to discover some of Tabin’s rich collection of almost 300 bird species. After breakfast, a drive to the core area for animal spotting and for a photo session before trekking to the Lipad Waterfall through the lush green rainforest known for its rich diversity of plants and animals. Take a dip in the natural pool and enjoy a natural and refreshing shower under the waterfall. Alternatively, explore the surrounding vegetation or just relax.
In the afternoon, try out the Tabin Rainforest Foot Soak made with a natural blend of herbs, to relax tired muscles after long jungle treks. In the evening, a dusk drive to look out for more nocturnal wildlife & birds coming out to look for food during this time of the day. After dinner, go for a night walk along the trail near the resort in search of sleeping birds, frogs and nocturnal wildlife.

Awake to the sounds of the rainforest and head off for one last early morning walk then return to the accommodation for breakfast. After breakfast, proceed to Sandakan overland (approx. 4.5 hour drive). We will enjoy a departing lunch together in Sandakan and from this point, we will part ways for your onward journey from Sandakan Airport (SDK).

WHAT TO EXPECT
The activity level for this trip has been rated as moderate. The itinerary includes short trail hikes, river cruises and safaris requiring extended periods of walking or standing for multiple hours depending on the day. The primary focus of this itinerary is wildlife and has been designed to optimise your encounters with Borneo’s fauna. Hikes range from 2 to 4 hours (2 to 5 kilometres) along formed trails on undulating terrain in hot and humid conditions. On days that do not include transfers to our next destination, guests have the option to opt in or out of activities to suit their level of comfort.
Accommodation
The accommodations for this destination have been chosen based on their location, access, comfort and the unique experience they provide. The lodges range from basic to mid-range ensuring a moderate level of comfort throughout the adventure.
We will spend 2 nights in bungalows at Sepilok Nature Resort, 3 nights riverside along the Kinabatangan Floodplain , 3 nights in chalets deep in the tropical rainforest at Danum Valley Field Centre, and 2 nights in lodges at Tabin Wildlife Resort.
Adventure Team
A local nature guide will be assigned to the group at each destination to further enrich your experience by providing a deeper level of local knowledge and insights to resident wildlife sightings.
Transportation
This itinerary will start and finish in Sandakan and whilst guests are responsible for their inbound and outbound flights, all overland transport will be included in both the itinerary and pricing. If you wish to arrange additional travel not included in the itinerary, your trip leads will be more than happy to recommend convenient transport options.
