    Witness the gentle majesty of orangutans and sun bears at Sepilok's conservation centres, immerse yourself in the jungle canopy at the Rainforest Discovery Centre, and explore the network of forest trails.

    Nestle amongst a riverside lodge along the Kinabatangan River where jungle life unfolds right outside your window, explore unique habitats by river cruise, and the unique Gomantong Cave network.

  • TABIN WILDLIFE RESERVE

    Awake to the morning chorus of gibbons in your riverside chalet set in the rainforest at Tabin Wildlife Reserve. The reserve is known for Lipad mud volcano, a giant salt lick for a host of species, and the rich birdlife with over 300 species recorded.

  • DANUM VALLEY CONSERVATION AREA

    Explore the immersive 130-million-year-old rainforest of Danum Valley, Borneo's verdant crown jewel. The Danum Valley Conservation Area is home to a plethora of Borneo’s unique wildlife species and the world’s tallest tropical trees.

  • Your adventure begins in Sandakan, upon arrival transfer to Sepilok (30mins drive) – your gateway to the tropical rainforests and natural wonders of Borneo.

    Sit back and relax at your accommodation and keep an eye out for wildlife locals around your bungalow whilst your adventure companions arrive. Once the group arrives we will spend the afternoon exploring the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve followed by dinner at the lodge.

  • Prepare for a full day exploration of the Sepilok-Kabili Forest Reserve area. Spend the morning at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre to watch the younger, playful orangutans in the nursery before catching the 10:00am feeding.

    After lunch, rest and relax before going out again at mid-afternoon to the Rainforest Discovery Center. Here, we will explore some of the trails and explore the height of the forest on the canopy walkway for some wildlife and bird watching. At sundown, we continue for a night walk at the discovery centre. Night walks along the trail also offer visitors a chance to catch a glimpse of the wildlife that has made the rainforest their homes, including cunning mouse deer, wily civet cats, cute tarsiers and various insects and birds.

    Return to accommodation for dinner and overnight.

  • Pick up from your hotel in the morning heading to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre for a guided visit and the opportunity to meet the sanctuary’s founder Dr Wong. From there you will travel overland to Hornbill Lodge, your based to explore the Kinabatangan Floodplain. Check-in, enjoy lunch and relax before heading out on your first afternoon river cruise. Over the next 2 hours, your guide will be on the lookout for proboscis monkey, long-tail and pig-tailed macaques, silvered langurs, orangutans, saltwater crocodiles, birds and more! After your river cruise, return to the lodge for dinner before joining your guide on an included night walk.

  • As day dawns, embark on a morning river cruise and watch as the river comes to life. Keep an eye out for bird life including Borneo’s endemic hornbills and have another chance to spot wildlife along the way.

    Return to the lodge for breakfast then join your guide for a jungle walk looking for signs of orangutans such as nests in the trees or even orangutans themselves if you are lucky! Enjoy lunch overlooking the river and a chance to rest before joining your afternoon river cruise. This cruise will focus on searching for pygmy elephants and may depart a little earlier if we need to travel further up or down river, there will also be plenty of other wildlife spotting opportunities along the way. After dinner, join your guide for an included night walk or optional add-on night cruise in search of nocturnal wildlife along the river bank.

  • Wake up early and join your guide for a dawn river cruise. Return to the lodge and enjoy breakfast overlooking the river. After breakfast, explore a nearby trail with your guide in search of orangutans, gibbons and a plethora of bird species.

    Have lunch at the lodge before leaving to the Gomantong caves in the afternoon. Explore the boardwalk that runs through Simud Hitam cave and keep an eye out for orangutans in the vicinity of the caves. As the sun starts to set, make your way up a steep 500 step staircase to the viewpoint overlooking the caves and a chance to witness over 1 millions bats exiting the caves at dusk. With luck, you will also witness hornbills and birds of prey hunting the bats upon their exodus.

    Return to the lodge for dinner followed by a night walk if you are feeling energetic.

  • Wake to the calls of the forest and ease into the day with a final dawn river cruise in search of wildlife. After breakfast you will depart the lodge and travel towards Tabin Wildlife Reserve, stopping in Lahad Datu for registration.

    On arrival you will settle into your Tabin Wildlife Resort chalet, then take a gentle walk along the Lipad River. This area supports a remarkable mix of birds, insects and small mammals.

    In the afternoon you can taken an optional walk along the Elephant Trail to the Lipad mud volcano. This active mud volcano acts as a natural salt lick, attracting a variety of wildlife. The open mud flats are often patterned with fresh footprints, a reminder of the animals that move through under the cover of the forest. Those keen for a small adventure are welcome to try the mineral rich mud for themselves.

    After dinner you will venture out on a night safari by 4X4, searching for the reserve’s nocturnal species.

  • Begin the day with an optional early morning bird walk, a gentle introduction to Tabin’s remarkable birdlife. The reserve supports close to three hundred species, so the variety on offer at first light can be impressive. After breakfast you will set out on a forest trek to Lipad Waterfall, passing through rainforest noted for its rich diversity of plants and animals. On arrival you can cool off in the natural pool or stand beneath the waterfall for a refreshing jungle shower. You may also choose to explore the surrounding vegetation or simply relax in the shade.

    The afternoon is yours to enjoy at the lodge. As evening approaches you will head out on a dusk drive, watching for wildlife that becomes active as the light fades. Dinner will be served back at the lodge, followed by an after dinner night walk along a nearby nature trail.

  • Wake early and set out in search of the resident north Bornean gibbons that are often heard calling near the resort. After breakfast you will have the rest of the day to explore a selection of forest trails with your guide, tailored to your interests and any recent wildlife sightings. After dinner you will venture out on a night drive to look for the reserve’s nocturnal species.

  • Depart Tabin Wildlife Reserve early and travel back towards Lahad Datu, stopping for registration before continuing on to Borneo Rainforest Lodge. Along the route there will be opportunities to spot wildlife.

    After lunch your guide will provide an orientation to the lodge and surrounding area, followed by an afternoon forest walk.

    After dinner you will take an included night drive in an electric buggy, accompanied by your guide, to search for nocturnal wildlife.

  • Wake to the sounds of the jungle and enjoy a leisurely breakfast before setting out on a guided trek along the Coffin Trail to the viewpoint and historic burial site at Coffin Cliff. Stop at a natural pool for a refreshing dip before returning to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon you can join a guided jungle walk to the lodge’s canopy walkway.

    After dinner take a guided night walk along the nearby nature trail for another chance to experience the forest after dark.

  • Awake to the sounds of the rainforest and head off for one last early morning walk then return to the accommodation for breakfast. After breakfast, proceed to Sandakan overland (approx. 5 hour drive).

    Arrive in Sandakan for your last night with the group enjoying a final dinner together marking the end of the trip.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The activity level for this trip has been rated as moderate. The itinerary includes short trail hikes, river cruises and safaris requiring extended periods of walking or standing for multiple hours depending on the day. The primary focus of this itinerary is wildlife and has been designed to optimise your encounters with Borneo’s fauna. Hikes range from 2 to 4 hours (2 to 5 kilometres) along formed trails on undulating terrain in hot and humid conditions. On days that do not include transfers to our next destination, guests have the option to opt in or out of activities to suit their level of comfort.

Accommodation

The lodgings for this destination have been chosen based on their location, accessibility, comfort and the unique nature experience they provide. The lodges range from mid-range to high-end ensuring a premium level of comfort throughout the adventure.
We will spend 2 nights in bungalows at Sepilok Nature Resort, 3 nights riverside along the Kinabatangan Floodplain , 3 nights in chalets deep in the tropical rainforest at Tabin Wildlife Resort, and 2 nights in lodges at the exclusive Borneo Rainforest Lodge.

Adventure Team

A local nature guide will be assigned to the group at each destination to further enrich your experience by providing a deeper level of local knowledge and insights to resident wildlife sightings.

Transportation

This itinerary will start and finish in Sandakan and whilst guests are responsible for their inbound and outbound flights, all overland transport will be included in both the itinerary and pricing. If you wish to arrange additional travel not included in the itinerary, your trip leads will be more than happy to recommend convenient transport options.
